CELAC Summit Concludes in Bogotá with Calls for Latin American Unity

BOGOTÁ – Regional leaders concluded the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit this week, with Colombia hosting high-level discussions focused on economic cooperation and political alignment. Colombian President Gustavo Petro emphasized the bloc's role in addressing inequality, stating: 'Unity is our strongest tool against neocolonial economic practices.'

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered a pointed critique of external interference, declaring that 'certain nations continue treating our resources as their birthright,' though he did not name specific countries. Uruguayan representatives echoed calls for strengthened trade mechanisms among member states.

The meeting comes as Latin American nations navigate competing global infrastructure investment proposals. CELAC members agreed to establish a working group for coordinating energy transition strategies, with formal proposals expected by Q3 2026.

CGTN correspondent Michelle Begue reported from the summit venue, noting heightened security measures and active civil society participation in parallel forums.
