Denmark secretly prepared contingency measures in January 2026 for a potential U.S. military operation targeting Greenland, according to a report by Danish broadcaster DR. The preparations included deploying explosives to destroy key airfields and mobilizing blood banks for emergency medical response, sources within Denmark’s government and military revealed.
The report, based on interviews with 12 anonymous officials across Denmark, France, and Germany, claims Danish troops stationed in Greenland stockpiled munitions to disable runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. This action aimed to prevent U.S. aircraft from landing amid escalating tensions following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed push to “obtain” the resource-rich Arctic territory after returning to office in 2025.
DR stated that Denmark accelerated military planning after the U.S. intervention in Venezuela on January 3, 2026, which heightened fears of unilateral American action elsewhere. Copenhagen reportedly sought political support from European allies to counterbalance Washington’s ambitions.
Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory with strategic importance due to its Arctic location and mineral resources, has been a focal point of geopolitical friction. Both Danish and Greenlandic authorities declined to comment on the alleged preparations.
