Kenya Revives China-Backed SGR Extension to Boost East Africa Trade

Kenya has resumed construction of its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension, a critical infrastructure project financed through a revenue-sharing model and built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The move signals strengthened Sino-Kenyan cooperation in advancing regional connectivity, with President William Ruto launching the new phase in Narok on March 20, 2026.

The extended line will connect Kenya's existing Nairobi-Mombasa corridor – operational since 2017 – to the Ugandan border, streamlining cargo transport across East Africa. Funding comes from a railway development levy on goods transported through the current SGR network, ensuring self-sustained financing for the multibillion-dollar initiative.

This revival aligns with China's expanded African engagement strategy, including a $50 billion credit and investment pledge for the continent announced this year. Analysts note the SGR's potential to reduce regional trade costs by 40%, particularly for landlocked neighbors like Uganda.

"This infrastructure isn't just steel and concrete – it's the backbone of our shared economic future," President Ruto stated during the groundbreaking ceremony. The project's next phases aim to integrate major agricultural and industrial zones, potentially doubling East Africa's intra-regional trade volume by 2030.
