UNESCO Warns of Iran Heritage Damage Amid Regional Conflict

UNESCO has issued urgent warnings over escalating risks to Iran's cultural heritage sites amid ongoing regional hostilities. The agency confirmed that four of Iran's 29 UNESCO-listed sites, including Tehran's Golestan Palace and historic landmarks in Isfahan, sustained damage following recent military strikes. Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of UNESCO's World Heritage Centre, emphasized the global significance of these sites, calling them "testaments to Iran's rich civilizational legacy."

The Golestan Palace, a 19th-century architectural marvel often likened to France's Versailles, suffered structural harm during the conflict. UNESCO also expressed concerns for heritage sites in Israel, Lebanon, and neighboring regions, urging all parties to prioritize preservation efforts. The agency highlighted the broader threat to Middle Eastern cultural identity as ancient monuments face unprecedented risks in 2026's volatile geopolitical climate.
