Russia’s Rosatom Condemns Attack Near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant

Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has strongly condemned an attack near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) this week, warning of heightened risks to global nuclear safety. The strike, which occurred on March 17, 2026, marks the first direct threat to an operational nuclear facility since the escalation of U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran.

Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev described the incident as “a flagrant disregard for international security principles,” emphasizing that the attack occurred dangerously close to the plant’s active reactor. While Iranian authorities confirmed no structural damage or casualties, they echoed concerns about violations of international norms.

Rosatom has initiated preparations to evacuate 480 remaining Russian personnel from Bushehr, escalating fears of a broader regional crisis. The warning follows a recent statement by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, who identified the plant as a critical security concern amid Middle East tensions.

Analysts suggest the incident could further strain diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region, with implications for energy markets and cross-border security frameworks. Business leaders and policymakers are closely monitoring developments, given Iran’s strategic role in global energy supply chains.
