Kenyan Initiative Tackles Boys’ Mental Health Through Books, Mentorship

In Kenya's Budalangi region, a youth-led initiative is reshaping conversations about mental health among adolescent boys through education and mentorship. Soma Nawe 254, a mental health advocacy group, launched its 2026 program at St Benedict High School this month, blending book drives with structured debates to address psychological well-being.

The organization's approach centers on peer engagement. During a recent session, students debated whether physical health outweighs mental health – a discussion that revealed nuanced understanding. One team emphasized mental health's role in shaping behavior, decision-making, and overall resilience, ultimately winning the debate through evidence-based arguments.

'This isn't just about distributing books,' explained a program coordinator. 'We're creating safe spaces for boys to articulate struggles they often silence – academic pressure, family dynamics, societal expectations.'

Educators report increased willingness among participants to seek counseling services following the initiative. With mental health disorders accounting for 13% of Kenya's disease burden according to 2025 Health Ministry data, such grassroots programs gain urgency.

Next phases will train teachers as mental health first responders and expand to three additional counties by June 2026.
