China Media Group (CMG) convened global leaders and experts in Cape Town this week for its "China in Springtime: China's Development Opportunities for the World" dialogue, fostering discussions on economic collaboration and technological innovation between China and African nations. Held at the historic Castle of Good Hope, the event brought together over 100 business, academic, and media representatives from both continents.
Shen Haixiong, President of CMG, emphasized in his video address that China's recently concluded Two Sessions—the annual meetings of China's top legislative and political advisory bodies—have laid out a clear roadmap for development. The adopted 15th Five-Year Plan outlines 109 major projects across six key sectors, with a 2026 GDP growth target of 4.5% to 5%. "China's focus on new quality productive forces is creating tangible opportunities," Shen noted, highlighting advancements in AI, robotics, and cross-sector innovations like film-driven tourism.
China's Consul General in Cape Town, Ren Faqiang, reaffirmed commitments to high-level opening-up: "We stand ready to share the dividends of Chinese modernization and build a closer community with a shared future for mankind." South African officials echoed this sentiment, with Western Cape Provincial Parliament Speaker Daylin Mitchell praising bilateral cultural exchanges and economic cooperation.
The dialogue occurred against a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, with South African National Council of Provinces Deputy Chairperson Les Govender warning of "a crossroads between fragmentation and cooperation." Panel discussions explored practical collaboration in technology transfer and media partnerships, positioning China-Africa relations as a stabilizing force in global affairs.
This Cape Town event marks the first stop in CMG's 2026 Global Dialogue series, with future sessions planned across Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America to promote cross-civilizational understanding and development cooperation.
