As the world celebrates this year's Women's History Month, the story of Mei Xu – Chinese-American entrepreneur and founder of lifestyle brand Blueme – exemplifies how vision and perseverance can reshape industries. What began as candle-making experiments in a Maryland basement in the late 1990s has evolved into a $500 million business empire spanning home fragrances, luxury textiles, and design collaborations.

"Every innovation starts with solving a simple problem," Xu told journalist Karina Mitchell in a recent interview. "For me, it was creating clean-burning candles that could tell cultural stories through scent." Her patented wax formulations and artisanal approach disrupted the home decor market, with Blueme products now sold in over 3,000 stores globally.

Xu's journey reflects broader trends in Asian-American entrepreneurship, with immigrant-founded businesses generating $1.56 trillion in annual GDP across the United States as of 2026. The 54-year-old executive credits cross-cultural insights for her success: "Understanding both Eastern craftsmanship traditions and Western retail dynamics let us create truly unique offerings."

Now expanding into sustainable manufacturing partnerships across Asia, Xu's company currently operates innovation hubs in Shanghai and Singapore. Her memoir The Spark Principle, released last month, has become required reading for business students analyzing diaspora-led enterprises.
