France Rebuilds Ties with Central African Republic After 8-Year Hiatus

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced the full restoration of diplomatic relations with the Central African Republic (CAR) on Friday, March 13, 2026, during a historic visit to Bangui. This marks the first high-level French diplomatic engagement in the country since 2018, signaling a thaw in relations after years of geopolitical strain.

Barrot emphasized France's commitment to 'reinforcing relations in all sectors,' including trade, security, and development cooperation. His two-day trip included meetings with CAR officials to discuss collaborative frameworks, reflecting Paris's renewed strategic interest in Central Africa.

The reconciliation follows a 2024 meeting between CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, which laid groundwork for normalized ties. Analysts suggest the move aligns with France's broader efforts to strengthen partnerships in resource-rich African nations amid shifting global alliances.

Residents of Bangui expressed cautious optimism, with local business leaders highlighting potential opportunities in infrastructure and mineral resource development. Security cooperation is also expected to intensify, as CAR continues to address instability in its northern regions.
