South Africa Summons US Envoy Over ‘Undiplomatic’ Comments

South Africa has formally summoned US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III following his characterization of the historic liberation chant "Kill the Boer" as hate speech, a claim directly contradicted by multiple South African court rulings. The diplomatic rebuke comes amid strained relations between Pretoria and Washington during Donald Trump's second presidential term.

Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola confirmed the ambassador was called to explain his remarks, made during visits to significant historical sites including the Apartheid Museum and District Six. "Such statements undermine our constitutional democracy and the progress made since 1994," Lamola stated.

Senior foreign affairs official Zane Dangor revealed Bozell apologized for his comments, acknowledging South Africa's "need for redress" while pledging constructive engagement. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the two nations, particularly regarding trade policies and diplomatic approaches under the current US administration.

Analysts note this marks the third major bilateral dispute in 2026, following clashes over mineral export tariffs and cybersecurity cooperation frameworks. The "Kill the Boer" chant controversy has reignited debates about historical memory versus contemporary diplomatic protocols in post-conflict societies.
