Tokyo Protests Escalate Over Takaichi’s Military Expansion Policies

Approximately 8,000 demonstrators braved chilly temperatures in central Tokyo on March 10, 2026, to voice opposition to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s controversial security policies. The protest, held outside Japan’s National Diet Building, focused on recent moves to deploy long-range missiles and relax restrictions on lethal arms exports – measures critics argue undermine the nation’s pacifist constitution.

Participants held banners declaring "No to war!" and "Stop trampling on the Constitution" while collectively reciting Article 9, which renounces war as a means of settling international disputes. Organizers reported an additional 1,000 virtual participants, reflecting growing public engagement.

Japanese Communist Party policy chief Taku Yamazoe condemned the government’s alignment with U.S. military strategy, stating: "Diplomacy based on war preparations contradicts our constitutional spirit. True stability comes through dialogue, not missiles." The rally saw significant youth participation, including 24-year-old Aya Yasui, who expressed alarm over missile deployments in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The demonstration comes as the Takaichi administration seeks to revise defense equipment transfer rules and accelerate nationwide missile deployment plans. These developments have sparked intense debate about Japan’s post-war identity, with protest organizers vowing to maintain pressure through grassroots mobilization.
