Kenya is accelerating its push to become a global sports tourism hub as the 2026 World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally kicks off this week in Naivasha. The event, starting Thursday, marks a strategic effort to showcase Kenya’s diverse attractions beyond its famed wildlife reserves.
The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) projects over 10,000 regional visitors will attend the four-day rally, with spectators traveling from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia. “This rally isn’t just about engines—it’s about connecting safari adventures with coastal escapes and cultural immersion,” said KTB CEO June Chepkemei.
Regional tourism data underscores the opportunity: East African visitors to Kenya surged to 568,264 in 2025, led by Uganda’s 238,595 arrivals. Rally attendee Emmanuel Mugagga exemplifies the trend, combining his motorsport passion with a Diani Beach vacation. “We raced through rally stages by day and snorkeled coral reefs by weekend,” he told KhabarAsia.com.
With Naivasha’s lakeside hotels at full capacity, analysts suggest Kenya’s multi-experience strategy could redefine African adventure travel. As engines roar to life this Thursday, all eyes are on whether high-octane tourism can fuel long-term economic growth.
