Ruwais Refinery Shut Down Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

The Ruwais oil refinery, the Middle East's largest single-site refining facility, has suspended operations as a precaution following a drone attack on March 10, 2026. The closure comes amid heightened regional instability that has entered its 11th day, with the UAE Defense Ministry reporting interceptions of 262 ballistic missiles and 1,475 drones since hostilities began.

Abu Dhabi authorities confirmed a fire at the Ruwais industrial complex following Tuesday's attack, though no injuries were reported at the facility. The refinery – capable of processing 922,000 barrels daily – plays a crucial role in global energy markets, with analysts warning of potential ripple effects on oil prices.

The escalation follows February 28 joint military actions by Israel and the U.S. against Iranian targets, which resulted in significant casualties including Iran's Supreme Leader. Tehran's subsequent retaliatory strikes have targeted multiple U.S. and Israeli assets across the region.

UAE officials reported six fatalities and 122 injuries from recent attacks, affecting residents from multiple Asian countries including Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Defense systems intercepted 89% of ballistic missiles and 74% of drones launched at the country on Tuesday alone, according to military statements.

Energy market observers are closely monitoring the situation, with the Ruwais closure representing the most significant operational disruption to Middle Eastern refining capacity since the current conflict began.
