Eliud Kipchoge Launches Global Marathon Tour in Cape Town

Two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge will make history this year by launching his inaugural marathon world tour in Africa, starting with the Cape Town Marathon on May 24. The event marks the Kenyan athlete's first competitive marathon on African soil and the beginning of a seven-race global initiative spanning the next three years.

Kipchoge, who holds multiple world records and made history with his sub-two-hour marathon in 2019, aims to leverage his star power to support conservation and education projects through his foundation. The 41-year-old runner emphasized the symbolic importance of starting his tour in Africa: "This continent shaped my journey, and I want to celebrate African excellence while inspiring future athletes."

The Cape Town Marathon's bid to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors series could receive significant momentum from Kipchoge's participation. A successful bid this year would elevate the event to the same tier as the London and Tokyo Marathons, potentially reshaping Africa's position in global athletics.

Sports analysts predict the tour will attract unprecedented attention to African marathon infrastructure, with potential economic benefits for host cities. The initiative also aligns with growing interest in sports philanthropy across developing economies.
