Former AU Leader Endorses Senegal's Ex-President for Top UN Role
Macky Sall's campaign to become the next UN secretary-general gained momentum this week as Moussa Faki Mahamat, former chairperson of the African Union Commission, publicly endorsed the Senegalese statesman. The endorsement comes amid growing speculation about leadership transitions at the world body in 2026.
In a social media statement dated March 8, Mahamat emphasized Sall's eight years of collaborative work within AU structures, including his 2022 tenure as AU chairperson. "His consensus-building approach during complex negotiations on continental security and trade agreements demonstrated exceptional diplomatic maturity," Mahamat wrote on X.
The public backing holds strategic significance as UN member states prepare for leadership consultations. Sall, who left Senegal's presidency in 2024, has positioned himself as a bridge-builder between Global South priorities and institutional reform demands.
Current geopolitical tensions – including ongoing debates about UN Security Council restructuring and climate financing mechanisms – make the secretary-general's role particularly crucial this year. African leaders have increasingly called for greater representation in global governance bodies.
