Iran’s IRGC Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) targeted an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on March 7, 2026, escalating regional tensions following weeks of military confrontations. The vessel, identified under the commercial name "Prima," was struck by a drone after allegedly ignoring repeated warnings about navigation restrictions in the strategic waterway.

The IRGC stated it has maintained control over the strait for eight consecutive days since the start of U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran on February 28, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and hundreds of civilians. Commercial ships linked to "hostile states" are now barred from passing through the chokepoint, which handles 20% of global oil shipments.

This development comes as Iran continues retaliatory strikes against Israeli and U.S. military assets across the Middle East. Regional analysts warn the conflict could disrupt critical shipping lanes and destabilize global energy markets, with oil prices already rising 18% since the initial attacks in late February.

While Iranian state media maintains the strait remains open to neutral vessels, Friday's military advisory explicitly classified U.S. and Israeli-affiliated ships as legitimate targets. The U.S. Fifth Fleet has yet to comment on the latest incident.
