Iran Reiterates Strait of Hormuz Open Despite Tanker Strike

Iranian authorities have again denied reports of closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade chokepoint, even as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed a drone strike on the oil tanker Prima in the waterway this week. The incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, followed repeated warnings to the vessel about traffic restrictions, according to an IRGC statement.

Senior Iranian officials emphasized this week that the strait remains open to commercial navigation. A military source quoted by state TV on March 5 warned, however, that vessels linked to the U.S. or Israel would be treated as military targets. Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh reiterated at a New Delhi conference on March 6 that Iran has no plans to close the strait, stating any such decision would be formally announced.

The developments come amid heightened regional tensions, with the IRGC asserting its right to control navigation during conflicts. Analysts note that approximately 30% of global seaborne oil passes through the strait, making stability crucial for energy markets. Business leaders and maritime insurers are closely monitoring the situation for potential impacts on shipping costs and supply chains.
