Niger Revokes Gold Mining Permits, Denies UK Oil License Renewal

Niger's military government has intensified its scrutiny of foreign resource extraction projects, canceling permits for three gold mining firms and rejecting a British energy company's request to extend an oil exploration license. Authorities cited contractual breaches, including unpaid taxes and environmental noncompliance, as the basis for the decisions announced this week.

Resource Sector Overhaul

The revoked gold mining concessions, granted between 2017 and 2020 to companies Comini, Afior, and Ecomine, were terminated after alleged failures to submit mandatory reports and meet fiscal obligations. This follows last year's nationalization of the Samira gold mine, Niger's sole industrial-scale gold operation.

Oil Exploration Setback

UK-based Savannah Energy's bid to extend its Agadem Rift Basin exploration license was denied, with Niamey claiming violations of production-sharing terms. The company recently reported significant oil discoveries in the southeastern basin, which accounts for over 50% of Niger's crude output.

Investor Implications

These moves signal growing resource nationalism in West Africa's Sahel region. Analysts suggest foreign firms operating in Niger should expect heightened compliance enforcement as the government seeks to maximize domestic revenue from mineral wealth.
