South Africa, Rwanda Push to Mend Ties Amid Diplomatic Challenges

South Africa has declared its current diplomatic relations with Rwanda “unsustainable” and called for urgent reforms, signaling a pivotal moment in bilateral ties. Bulelwa Kiva, acting chief director for East Africa at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, emphasized the need for action during a virtual parliamentary briefing on Wednesday.

Kiva acknowledged ongoing efforts to restore normal relations but cited scheduling conflicts among senior officials as a key obstacle. Despite delays, both nations have engaged in discussions on the sidelines of multilateral forums to address critical issues, including visa policies and institutional collaboration.

“South Africa and Rwanda are committed to this process and to resuscitating the Joint Commission of Cooperation,” Kiva stated, underscoring mutual resolve to rebuild trust. Analysts suggest the outcome could influence regional stability and economic partnerships across Africa.
