Spain Vows to Counter Potential US Trade Embargo, Cites Economic Resilience

The Spanish government asserted on March 3, 2026, that it possesses sufficient resources to mitigate the effects of a potential trade embargo by the United States. This follows remarks by US President Donald Trump threatening to sever trade ties over Spain’s refusal to permit US military use of its bases for operations against Iran. The government emphasized adherence to international law, business autonomy, and existing EU-US agreements in any response measures.

As NATO’s sixth-largest economy and a key EU exporter, Spain highlighted its trade relationships with 195 countries, including the US. Officials pledged support for affected industries and diversification of supply chains to reduce vulnerabilities. Second Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz condemned Trump’s statements as “unacceptable,” reaffirming Spain’s rejection of external pressure.

The dispute arose during Trump’s March 3 meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where he reiterated his threat publicly. Analysts note the escalation underscores ongoing tensions between Washington and European allies regarding military cooperation and trade alignment.
