US Sanctions Rwanda Military Over DR Congo Conflict: Tensions Rise

The United States imposed sanctions on Rwanda's military this week, escalating tensions over the protracted conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). The move, announced by the US Treasury Department on Monday, accuses Rwanda of violating peace agreements aimed at stabilizing eastern DR Congo. Rwanda swiftly condemned the sanctions as "unfair" and "misleading," asserting that the measures overlook violations by DR Congo forces.

In a statement released Tuesday, Rwandan authorities criticized the US decision, emphasizing that DR Congo forces have repeatedly breached ceasefires through drone attacks and ground offensives, causing civilian casualties. "Protecting our country is a badge of honor which the Rwanda Defense Force carries very proudly," the statement read. Meanwhile, DR Congo officials praised the sanctions as a "clear signal of support" for its sovereignty.

Despite the friction, Rwanda reaffirmed its commitment to the Washington Accords, a regional peace framework, and called for balanced engagement from international partners. Both nations acknowledged the resumption of a Joint Oversight Committee to monitor disengagement efforts, though progress remains fragile.

Analysts warn the sanctions could strain US-Rwanda relations while complicating peace initiatives in a region grappling with decades of instability. The conflict has displaced over 2 million people since 2022, according to UN estimates, with humanitarian conditions worsening this year.
