Tram Derailment in Milan Leaves 1 Dead, 20 Injured During Fashion Week

A tram derailment disrupted Milan's Fashion Week activities on Friday afternoon, killing one person and injuring approximately 20 others after the vehicle careened into a building on Vittorio Veneto Street. Authorities confirmed the fatality and critical injuries to at least one victim as emergency crews rushed to the scene near the city's historic center.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as firefighters wrapped shaken passengers in emergency blankets and ambulances transported the injured. "I thought it was an earthquake," one passenger told ANSA news agency, recounting how the impact threw passengers to the floor. Local worker Anna, 27, who witnessed the crash from her nearby office, recalled hearing an "enormous bang" before seeing part of the tram embedded in a storefront.

The incident occurred during Milan's high-profile Fashion Week, drawing global business leaders and designers to the northern Italian hub. While the cause remains under investigation, preliminary witness accounts suggest the tram was traveling at significant speed prior to derailing. Milan's transport operator ATM has not yet issued a public statement regarding the accident.
