Japan Faces Prolonged Norovirus Surge as Cases Rise for Fifth Week

Japan is grappling with a sustained norovirus outbreak as infectious gastroenteritis cases rise for the fifth consecutive week, according to NHK reports. Health authorities confirm clusters across multiple regions, with food poisoning incidents linked to contaminated meals at restaurants and hotels.

The Japan Institute for Health Security reported 9.48 patients per clinic in early February, based on data from 2,000 pediatric facilities. Aomori Prefecture's Hotel Towadaso temporarily closed after 47 guests and staff tested positive for norovirus following meals served in early February. Similarly, Nara Prefecture's Restaurant Heian suspended operations after 10 diners fell ill with fever and vomiting.

"Norovirus spreads rapidly through contaminated food or surfaces," explained a health ministry representative. Authorities recommend disinfecting surfaces with sodium hypochlorite and washing clothes at 85°C for at least one minute to curb transmission.

This outbreak comes as Japan prepares for peak spring travel season, raising concerns about potential spread through tourism and group dining. Health officials urge vigilance in food preparation and personal hygiene practices nationwide.
