Kinshasa Activists Fight to Save Historic Baobab Tree in City Center

Environmental activists in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), are rallying to protect a century-old Baobab tree in the Gombe suburb – the last remaining specimen in the city’s historic core. The tree, once used as a gathering site by past leaders, now faces threats from a halted construction project after activists petitioned the government to intervene.

Jean Mangalibi, a local gardener and environmental advocate, spearheaded the campaign through the platform 'About the Baobab.' He emphasized the tree’s symbolic value: "Our country used to be Africa’s green economy. The best place to discuss these ideas is under the Baobab. We will do everything to save it."

Activists allege officials from the DRC’s state-owned transport company illegally sold the land to a private developer. While authorities have not publicly addressed the claims, the project’s suspension has temporarily eased concerns among residents. Kinshasa retains Baobab populations on its outskirts, but activists argue the Gombe tree’s historical and cultural significance makes its preservation urgent.
