Russia and Iran are advancing plans to construct additional nuclear power plant blocks, signaling deeper energy cooperation between the two nations. Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev announced the initiative on Wednesday during a joint press conference with Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, following meetings of the Iran-Russia Joint Economic Cooperation Commission.
Tsivilev confirmed that the second and third blocks of Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant are currently under construction, with both countries now exploring new sites for additional reactors. A dedicated working group has been established to finalize plans within three months, aiming to address Iran's growing energy demands through peaceful nuclear technology.
This collaboration builds on a $25 billion agreement signed last September to construct four third-generation nuclear units in Iran's southern Hormozgan province. Paknejad emphasized the strategic importance of bilateral energy projects, including ongoing discussions to export Russian natural gas to Iran to balance its domestic energy needs.
The partnership underscores both nations' efforts to strengthen economic ties amid global energy market shifts, positioning nuclear energy as a cornerstone of their long-term cooperation.
