ELLE FM: Goma’s Beacon of Hope Amid Conflict

In the heart of Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), ELLE FM radio station has become a lifeline for residents enduring relentless conflict. Established in 2023, the station has survived attacks, looting, and the ongoing threat posed by M23 rebels who currently control the region. Its journalists work under constant danger to deliver vital news and foster unity in one of Africa's most volatile areas.

Mid-morning host Rose Mathe describes the precarious balance between duty and survival: "When armed conflict erupts, media personnel are often the first victims. Our job is to inform impartially, but fear and polarization make this nearly impossible." Despite these challenges, ELLE FM—whose name translates to "SHE" in French—remains a rare source of unfiltered updates on security, economics, and community initiatives.

Local businessman Rodrigue Bahati notes radio's irreplaceable role: "It’s how we learn about road safety, market prices, and dangers. But radios aren’t being sold anymore—people can’t afford them." This economic collapse adds urgency to ELLE FM’s mission, as over 70% of Goma’s population relies on analog broadcasts for critical information.

Three journalists from the station have been killed since 2023, yet the team persists. "We’re not just reporters—we’re peace agents," Mathe asserts. Their programming now includes conflict mediation hotlines and educational segments on navigating checkpoints.

As the DRC government struggles to stabilize the region, ELLE FM’s survival symbolizes grassroots resilience. For displaced families and entrepreneurs alike, the station’s frequency remains tuned to hope—proof that even in darkness, truth finds a way to broadcast.
