U.S. Shutdown Looms as Congress Deadlocked Over Immigration Reforms

With a partial U.S. government shutdown set to begin on February 14, 2026, congressional Republicans and Democrats remain locked in a high-stakes standoff over immigration enforcement policies. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) faces funding suspension unless lawmakers reach a last-minute compromise.

Senate Democratic leaders, including Senator Chuck Schumer, have refused to approve new DHS funding without significant operational reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Proposed changes include restricting roaming patrols, prohibiting agents from wearing face masks during operations, and requiring judicial warrants to enter private properties.

The debate intensified following the January 2026 deaths of Minneapolis residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot by federal agents during protests against immigration enforcement actions. Democrats are now demanding stricter accountability measures for ICE, including adherence to existing use-of-force standards.

"Democrats will not support a blank check for chaos," Schumer stated, emphasizing his party’s stance ahead of the midnight deadline. This would mark the third shutdown during former President Donald Trump’s second term, following a record 43-day closure in late 2025.

As negotiations continue, the potential shutdown raises concerns about disruptions to border security operations and federal immigration courts, with analysts warning of cascading effects on U.S.-Asia economic partnerships reliant on stable visa processing systems.
