Trump’s ‘Peace Board’ Proposal Sparks Palestinian Concerns Over UN Bypass

Palestinian officials have raised alarms about former U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed 'Board of Peace,' which was formally launched last month as a potential alternative to United Nations mechanisms. The initiative, unveiled during the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, 2026, has drawn skepticism from Fatah leadership and Palestinian diplomats.

Sabri Saidam, Fatah's deputy secretary-general, told reporters this week that the board's objectives remain ambiguous and exclusionary. 'There are legitimate fears that this project could marginalize Palestinian voices while advancing policies detrimental to our people's rights,' he stated, reflecting concerns about displacement risks and erasure of Palestinian political claims.

Omar Awadallah, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political and Legal Affairs, emphasized the need to strengthen existing international frameworks rather than create parallel structures. In a recent radio interview, he stressed: 'Any new initiatives must complement – not replace – established institutions working toward Palestinian statehood and regional stability.'

The proposal comes amid ongoing efforts to rebuild Gaza following recent conflicts, with Palestinian authorities calling for immediate ceasefire implementation and reconstruction support. While several nations have joined the Trump-backed initiative, multiple traditional U.S. allies and global powers have notably abstained from participation.
