Egypt has called for the urgent deployment of an international stabilization force to oversee the Gaza ceasefire, marking a pivotal step in regional peace efforts this year. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty outlined the proposal during a Sunday discussion with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, emphasizing the need to advance the U.S.-backed peace plan's second phase.
The initiative, endorsed by the UN Security Council in November 2025, aims to transition Gaza toward stability through a structured withdrawal of Israeli forces, disarmament of Hamas, and reconstruction under transitional governance. Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's support for the newly formed Palestinian technocratic National Committee, established last month to manage daily humanitarian and administrative operations in Gaza until the Palestinian Authority resumes full governance.
Since its implementation on October 10, 2025, the ceasefire has facilitated prisoner exchanges and aid deliveries. However, challenges persist in securing sustained humanitarian access and preparing for large-scale recovery projects. Abdelatty stressed that the proposed international force would ensure compliance with ceasefire terms while accelerating reconstruction efforts critical to long-term peace.
