Pentagon Severs Academic Ties with Harvard Over Ideological Clash

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on February 7, 2026, that it will terminate all academic partnerships with Harvard University starting in the 2026-2027 school year. The decision halts military-funded education programs, fellowships, and certificate courses at the Ivy League institution.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized Harvard for promoting what he called 'globalist and radical ideologies,' stating: 'Our officers return with minds shaped more by Harvard's worldview than military readiness.' The move follows years of tension between the Trump administration and universities over campus policies and alleged ideological bias.

While current military students may complete their programs, future personnel will be directed to alternative institutions. Hegseth confirmed a broader review of Ivy League partnerships, emphasizing cost-effectiveness and strategic alignment with defense priorities.

The decision coincides with President Donald Trump's recent demand for $1 billion in damages from Harvard, citing unresolved disputes over campus safety protocols during student protests. Critics argue these actions risk politicizing military education, with former Harvard leadership warning of threats to academic independence.
