Bangladesh Confirms Nipah Virus Fatality in Rajshahi Division

Recent Case Highlights Persistent Zoonotic Threat

Health authorities in Bangladesh confirmed a Nipah virus (NiV)-related death in Naogaon District, Rajshahi Division, marking the first reported case of 2026. The 35-year-old patient was hospitalized on January 28 and succumbed within 24 hours, with laboratory confirmation completed the following day.

Containment Efforts Underway

All 35 identified contacts have tested negative for NiV, according to the World Health Organization. No secondary infections have been detected. The patient’s consumption of raw date palm sap – a common transmission vector during the December-April harvesting season – is under investigation as the likely infection source.

Global Health Risk Remains Low

While Bangladesh’s Health Ministry has activated outbreak protocols, WHO maintains a low-risk assessment nationally and internationally. Nipah virus, transmitted primarily through fruit bats and contaminated food, carries a 40-75% mortality rate but responds to early treatment. Previous outbreaks have occurred in multiple Asian countries, including India and Malaysia.
