ASEAN Celebrates Chinese New Year for First Time in Jakarta

In a historic display of cultural unity, ASEAN hosted its inaugural Chinese New Year celebration at its Jakarta headquarters on Thursday, marking a symbolic convergence of traditions ahead of the Year of the Horse beginning February 17. The event coincides with the 35th anniversary of China-ASEAN dialogue partnership and five years since establishing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

More than 250 diplomats, business leaders, and academics gathered under the theme "Steeds Herald Spring, Blessings Fill ASEAN," including representatives from all 11 member states and partner nations such as the Republic of Korea, Russia, and Brazil. Traditional lion dances and calligraphy demonstrations highlighted the program, emphasizing shared cultural values across the Asia-Pacific region.

ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi noted the celebration reinforces "people-to-people connectivity" amid growing economic cooperation, with China-ASEAN trade surpassing $1 trillion in 2025. The event also featured exhibits showcasing joint infrastructure projects under Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.
