UN and US Launch $700M Sudan Aid Fund Amid Escalating Crisis

The United Nations and United States announced a $700 million humanitarian fund for Sudan on February 3, 2026, as the country enters its third year of devastating conflict. The initiative, backed by $200 million from the U.S. and $500 million from the UAE, aims to address what UN officials call "the world's largest humanitarian crisis."

UN Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher emphasized the urgency of delivering aid before Ramadan begins on February 17, stating: "We're working to ensure lifesaving assistance reaches communities in desperate need." U.S. Senior Adviser Massad Boulos revealed plans for a comprehensive humanitarian truce that could be finalized in coming weeks.

The conflict between Sudan's military and Rapid Support Forces paramilitary has displaced over 14 million people since 2023, with famine declared in multiple regions. While official estimates report 40,000 deaths, aid organizations warn actual figures may be significantly higher.

Saudi Arabia and other nations have pledged additional support, though specific amounts remain undisclosed. The fund prioritizes food distribution, medical supplies, and protection for vulnerable populations as spring approaches – traditionally the leanest season for food supplies in the region.
