China Criticizes U.S. ‘Cold War Mentality’ Over Panama Canal Ruling

China has condemned recent U.S. comments regarding Panama's Supreme Court decision to annul a port contract with Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison, accusing Washington of perpetuating a 'cold war mentality.' The diplomatic clash comes as tensions rise over infrastructure influence in strategic maritime corridors.

Panama's top court revoked CK Hutchison's operating license for two container terminals last week, citing constitutional violations in the 25-year concession agreement. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio subsequently praised the ruling, stating it 'protects Panamanian sovereignty.'

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded sharply during a February 4 briefing: 'The international community clearly sees who truly respects international law versus those using legal pretexts to serve geopolitical agendas.' He reaffirmed China's commitment to protecting overseas investors' rights through 'all necessary measures.'

The Panama Canal handles 6% of global maritime trade, making terminal operations crucial for international commerce. CK Hutchison, which has managed the ports since 2016, faces operational uncertainty following the court's decision.

Analysts suggest the dispute reflects broader competition for infrastructure influence in Latin America. China has invested over $10 billion in Panamanian projects since diplomatic relations were established in 2017, while the U.S. remains the canal's primary user.

The Chinese government maintains that commercial disputes should be resolved through legal frameworks rather than geopolitical posturing. 'We oppose any external forces interfering in normal business cooperation between China and Panama,' Lin emphasized.
