Fresh Clashes in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region Spark AU Call for Dialogue

Renewed clashes between Ethiopian federal forces and Tigray regional fighters have raised alarms over destabilization in the contested Tsemlet area of western Tigray, with reports of disrupted air travel and economic strain on residents. The violence marks a setback to the 2022 peace agreement that mandated the withdrawal of Amhara regional forces from the area.

Diplomatic and security sources warn of escalating tensions, as flight suspensions leave families stranded and banks impose strict withdrawal limits. Mekelle resident Gebremedhin Tesfamichael described widespread frustration: "People are suffering from sudden cancellations and can’t access their savings."

The African Union (AU) issued a statement on January 29, 2026, urging immediate dialogue and reaffirming its commitment to mediate. "The AU stands ready to intensify efforts for lasting peace," the organization emphasized, while monitoring developments closely.

Analysts caution that unresolved territorial disputes and delayed implementation of past agreements continue to undermine stability in the Horn of Africa. The clashes highlight urgent challenges in reconciling regional autonomy with federal authority—a dynamic being watched by global investors and policymakers.
