US Announces Tariff Hike on South Korean Imports Amid Trade Tensions

The United States has announced plans to increase tariffs on select imports from the Republic of Korea (ROK) from 15% to 25%, escalating trade tensions in early 2026. Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated via social media on January 27 that the decision targets automobiles, lumber, pharmaceuticals, and other goods, citing the ROK legislature’s failure to ratify a bilateral trade agreement.

Trump claimed the move addresses “reciprocal tariffs,” though Seoul confirmed it has yet to receive formal notification from Washington. The ROK’s presidential office announced plans for an interagency meeting and a visit by the trade minister to the U.S. to address the dispute.

The proposed hike follows heightened scrutiny of Asia-Pacific trade dynamics this year, with analysts warning of potential supply chain disruptions. The ROK, a key exporter of semiconductors and electric vehicles, faces renewed pressure amid global market volatility.

Observers note the development underscores shifting geopolitical priorities in the region, particularly as businesses and investors await clarity on cross-border trade policies.
