Iranian lawmakers have vehemently condemned a European Parliament resolution passed on January 22, 2026, labeling it as foreign interference in domestic matters. The resolution accused Tehran of human rights violations during recent protests and called for designating Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
In a January 25 statement, Iranian legislators described the move as a "transparent attempt to divert attention from the EU's internal challenges." They cited evidence alleging foreign intelligence services coordinated with groups that allegedly instigated violence during protests that began in late December 2025 over currency depreciation.
The lawmakers asserted the IRGC—credited with counterterrorism efforts in West Asia—had been wrongfully targeted, calling the designation an "unjust accusation." They emphasized European governments bear responsibility for supporting what Tehran claims were "terrorist actions" during the unrest.
While initial December protests focused on economic concerns, Iranian authorities claim external actors transformed demonstrations into violent attacks on public infrastructure. The statement reaffirmed Iran's position that accountability should extend to foreign entities allegedly involved.
