Ethiopia Successfully Contains First Marburg Virus Outbreak, WHO Confirms

Ethiopia announced on January 26, 2026, the conclusion of its inaugural Marburg virus outbreak, marking 42 consecutive days without new cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the milestone, highlighting the nation’s swift containment efforts following the outbreak’s emergence in November 2025.

Health authorities documented 14 cases across the Southern Ethiopian Region, with nine fatalities reported. Health Minister Mekdes Daba Feyssa attributed the success to “strong national leadership and community-driven response strategies,” emphasizing collaboration between frontline workers and local residents.

WHO officials praised Ethiopia’s implementation of rigorous contact tracing, rapid case detection, and public education campaigns to curb transmission. While the outbreak has been contained, health agencies urge continued vigilance to prevent future resurgences.

Understanding Marburg Virus

The Marburg virus, a rare hemorrhagic fever with similarities to Ebola, remains a global health concern due to its high fatality rate and lack of approved vaccines or treatments. Symptoms include severe fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding, with transmission occurring through direct contact with bodily fluids.
