Nuuk Restores Power After Winter Storm Disrupts Grid

Greenland's capital, Nuuk, regained electricity and heating early Sunday morning after a severe storm damaged a critical transmission cable, leaving thousands without power during a frigid Arctic night. The outage, which began late Saturday, was resolved by utility company Nukissiorfiit at approximately 4:30 a.m., restoring supply from the Buksefjord hydropower plant.

Residents of Nuuk, accustomed to frequent weather-related disruptions, faced subzero temperatures as the cable—vulnerable to Greenland's rugged terrain and fjord crossings—failed under storm conditions. The incident occurred just days after Greenland’s government updated crisis preparedness guidelines, urging households to stockpile five days’ worth of food and water. This advisory followed heightened regional tensions linked to historical U.S. interest in acquiring the Danish territory during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Analysts highlight the broader challenges of maintaining energy infrastructure in extreme climates, with Nuuk’s reliance on a single transmission line underscoring risks faced by Arctic communities.
