Madagascar Launches Solar-Powered Smart Villages to Boost Rural Development

Southern Madagascar's rural communities are witnessing a transformative leap in 2026 with the launch of a 'smart village' initiative, combining solar energy, digital connectivity, and sustainable agriculture. The project, spearheaded by Madagascar's Ministry of Digital Development alongside the World Food Programme (WFP), addresses long-standing challenges of food insecurity and limited infrastructure.

Solar-powered internet hubs now provide real-time market data and digital classrooms, while energy-efficient drip irrigation systems and hydroponics are revitalizing agricultural output. Over 1,200 youths have gained digital skills through training centers, and solar refrigeration in school canteens has improved nutrition for thousands of students.

Local authorities report reduced deforestation due to electric cookers and enhanced trade opportunities through connectivity. The initiative, benefiting over 10,000 residents daily, aligns with Madagascar's broader strategy to bridge urban-rural divides and modernize public services in remote areas.
