Zimbabwe Floods Claim Over 80 Lives as Rains Devastate Communities

At least 83 people have died and more than 1,300 homes were destroyed after weeks of torrential rains battered Zimbabwe, according to authorities. The disaster has displaced thousands and crippled infrastructure across multiple provinces, with Manicaland near the Mozambique border suffering particularly severe damage.

Flooded rivers submerged entire neighborhoods, washed away bridges, and collapsed roads, isolating communities. Artisanal miners working in rain-soaked pits accounted for many fatalities, while others drowned attempting to cross swollen waterways or were killed by lightning strikes.

The Red Cross Society of Zimbabwe has mobilized emergency teams in coordination with the Civil Protection Department. 'We've deployed tents, blankets, and medical supplies to high-risk zones,' said Mathias Begede, the organization's programs director. Humanitarian groups are prioritizing shelter and disease prevention as displaced families face food shortages and contaminated water sources.

While weather conditions show signs of improvement, officials warn that recovery efforts will take months. The government has appealed for international aid to support ongoing relief operations and long-term reconstruction plans.
