Denmark, Greenland Reaffirm Arctic Sovereignty Amid NATO Talks

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated on Thursday that Arctic security discussions must respect Denmark's territorial integrity, following renewed U.S. interest in Greenland's strategic resources. The statement comes after recent diplomatic tensions over former U.S. President Donald Trump's 2020 proposal to acquire the semi-autonomous territory, which Greenland authorities firmly rejected.

Balancing Security and Sovereignty

Frederiksen emphasized that while Denmark remains open to NATO-aligned security cooperation, including potential missile-defense systems, any agreements must involve Greenland's elected representatives. 'The Kingdom of Denmark wishes to continue constructive dialogue with allies on Arctic security,' she stated, underscoring that sovereignty remains non-negotiable.

Greenland's Growing Strategic Role

With melting ice caps revealing untapped mineral reserves and new shipping routes, Greenland has become a focal point for global powers. The U.S. maintains its Pituffik air base under a 1951 defense agreement but has reduced its military footprint since the Cold War. Greenlandic MP Aaja Chemnitz stressed: 'Nothing can be decided without our participation—this applies to NATO and all international partners.'

Path Forward

Under Greenland's 2009 self-rule agreement, the territory could pursue independence via referendum with Danish approval. Analysts suggest current talks may accelerate Greenland's push for greater foreign policy autonomy while balancing NATO security needs and sustainable resource development.
