UN Urges Sustained Gaza Ceasefire Amid Aid Challenges

The United Nations has raised alarms over the fragility of the Gaza ceasefire, now in its fourth month, and persistent obstacles to humanitarian aid delivery. In a statement released on January 20, 2026, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) emphasized that the October 2025 truce – which recently surpassed 100 days – remains critical to preventing further civilian casualties.

OCHA’s latest report reveals 463 fatalities and 1,269 injuries recorded since the ceasefire began, with 14 deaths occurring in the 48 hours preceding January 16. The World Food Programme (WFP) warned that despite providing monthly food assistance to over one million Gazans through parcels and hot meals, “the situation remains precarious.” The agency called for expanded safe corridors from Egypt and Jordan to boost aid volumes.

Meanwhile, a UN-led immunization campaign targeting children under three years old entered its second phase this week, with 170 medical teams operating across Gaza. A third round is scheduled for April 2026 to address healthcare gaps exacerbated by conflict.

In the West Bank, OCHA reported a 24-hour curfew affecting 25,000 Palestinians in Hebron’s H2 area following an Israeli military operation. The lockdown has forced closures of bakeries, voucher-based supply shops, and schools, while damaged power infrastructure left residents without electricity. Emergency repairs and online education measures are being prioritized amid restricted mobility.
