South Sudan President Kiir Shakes Up Cabinet Amid Rising Tensions

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir announced a major cabinet reshuffle late Monday, replacing Interior Minister Angelina Teny with former Warrap state governor Aleu Ayieny Aleu. The move comes amid heightened political tensions following the prolonged house arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar, Teny's husband, since March 2025.

Aleu, who previously held the interior portfolio from 2013 to 2015, returns to the position as security challenges persist across the world's youngest nation. Teny, a senior opposition figure, had been largely inactive in her ministerial role since Machar's detention, with daily operations managed by her deputy.

Analysts suggest the reshuffle reflects ongoing power struggles within South Sudan's unity government. The changes follow months of stalled peace agreement implementation and economic pressures from fluctuating global oil prices — a critical factor for the petroleum-dependent nation.

While state television confirmed several other senior official removals, details about subsequent appointments remain pending. Observers await responses from regional blocs including the African Union and IGAD regarding the latest developments.
