Guatemala Imposes 30-Day State of Siege After Deadly Police Attacks

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared a nationwide state of siege Sunday following coordinated attacks that killed seven police officers and triggered prison riots. The 30-day emergency measure aims to combat criminal gangs and restore public security amid escalating violence.

The crisis unfolded as gang members took 46 hostages during uprisings at three detention centers. Security forces regained control of the facilities, but authorities confirmed the attacks were retaliation against recent anti-crime operations. "We do not yield or negotiate with terrorists," stated a government release.

President Arevalo ordered three days of national mourning for the fallen officers while deploying military units to support police patrols. Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda warned that security forces remain on high alert, describing the violence as "a direct challenge to state authority."

Analysts suggest the siege declaration marks President Arevalo's strongest response since taking office last year. The measure temporarily restricts constitutional rights to facilitate warrantless arrests and expanded surveillance – controversial powers that human rights groups urge should be used judiciously.
