Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of this week's presidential election, securing 71.6% of votes according to final results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday. The 81-year-old leader, in power since 1986, faced eight challengers in a poll conducted under heightened security measures.
EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama confirmed the outcome at Kampala's National Tally Center, noting the election remained "largely calm" despite pre-vote tensions. Pop-star-turned-opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi captured 24.7% of votes, while six other candidates shared the remaining 3.7%.
The results extend Museveni's four-decade presidency amid growing youth demographics and calls for political transition. International observers have yet to issue comprehensive assessments, though regional leaders are expected to recognize the outcome.
