Hamas representatives have initiated critical discussions in Cairo with Egyptian mediators to establish a technocratic committee tasked with administering Gaza, as part of a US-mediated ceasefire framework. The talks, which began this week, aim to finalize the committee's structure and operational protocols under a plan first proposed by US President Donald Trump in October 2025.
Key agenda items include the withdrawal of Israeli forces, reopening of the Rafah border crossing, and expediting humanitarian aid delivery. Hamas officials emphasized their role as observers rather than direct administrators, stating their priority is to 'support stability and reconstruction' during the transitional phase.
Parallel negotiations with Palestinian factions like Fatah seek consensus on political reconciliation and leadership appointments for the proposed committee. Former Palestinian Authority official Ali Shaath and Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan are reportedly leading candidates to head the body.
Egyptian mediators are concurrently facilitating dialogue between Hamas and Fatah to resolve longstanding governance disputes. Hamas insists that President Mahmoud Abbas must formalize the committee through an official decree following inter-factional agreement.
