Greenland Rejects U.S. Acquisition Ambitions, Affirms Self-Determination

Greenland's political leaders issued a unified rebuke of U.S. territorial aspirations on Friday, declaring "We do not want to be Americans" in a rare joint statement. The document, titled "We Stand Together as One People," underscores growing tensions over Arctic sovereignty as global powers vie for strategic influence.

The statement emphasized Greenland's right to self-determination under international law and the 2009 Self-Government Act, which grants the autonomous Danish territory control over most domestic affairs. "Work concerning Greenland's future must be carried out with the Greenlandic people," the leaders asserted, while maintaining openness to continued cooperation with Western partners.

The declaration follows controversial remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who reiterated his 2019 position on Friday by stating plans to "do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not." Political analysts suggest this renewed interest reflects ongoing competition for Arctic resources and shipping routes.

While reaffirming ties with Denmark, Greenlandic leaders called for an end to what they described as "the United States' disregard for our country." The island's strategic importance has grown exponentially in recent years due to climate-driven Arctic accessibility and rare earth mineral deposits critical for green technology.
