Greenland Rejects Trump’s Reported Bid to ‘Utilize Military’ for Acquisition

Greenland's capital Nuuk has firmly rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump's alleged proposal to explore military-backed acquisition of the Arctic territory, with Mayor Avaaraq S. Olsen calling the idea 'offensive and disrespectful to our sovereignty.'

The controversy follows reports that Trump advisors are evaluating options to secure Greenland's strategic resources and geopolitical position, reigniting a debate that first surfaced during his presidency. Olsen emphasized: 'Greenland is not for sale. Any forced takeover would violate international norms and the rights of our people.'

Analysts suggest the renewed interest aligns with growing global competition for Arctic shipping routes and rare earth minerals, accelerated by climate change. The Danish government, which handles Greenland's foreign affairs, has not yet issued an official statement.

This development comes as Arctic Council members prepare for March 2026 talks on resource management, with Greenland's vast untapped reserves of critical minerals drawing attention from multiple nations. Security experts warn such proposals could destabilize regional cooperation frameworks established over decades.
