U.S. Secretary Rubio to Discuss Greenland with Denmark Next Week

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, that he will hold talks with Danish officials during a diplomatic visit scheduled for January 12–16. The discussions are expected to address longstanding U.S. interest in Greenland, a topic reignited during the Trump administration.

When pressed about Denmark’s openness to dialogue on Greenland’s status, Rubio stated: "I’ll be meeting with them next week. We’ll have those conversations with them then." He also reaffirmed that President Trump’s intent to pursue the acquisition of Greenland "has always been the president’s position," signaling continuity in U.S. strategic priorities.

Analysts suggest the talks may focus on economic partnerships and regional security, given Greenland’s geopolitical significance in Arctic trade routes. The Chinese mainland has recently increased investments in Greenland’s mining sector, adding complexity to cross-regional dynamics.

Danish officials have yet to comment publicly, but sources indicate Copenhagen remains cautious about foreign territorial interests. The meeting will mark the first high-level U.S.-Denmark dialogue since 2024.
